Tummy Tuck Q & A

What is a tummy tuck?

A tummy tuck, also called an abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure that gets rid of excess skin and fat in your belly. The procedure can also improve your abdominal profile, making it smoother and more toned.

If you’ve tried diet and exercise to get a firm, toned stomach with no success, a tummy tuck might be the solution for you. Even if you aren’t overweight, you can still develop a sagging tummy as the result of aging, pregnancy, or a prior surgery.

How does a tummy tuck work?

When you visit Dr. Levine for a tummy tuck, a trained anesthesiologist administers a sedative, so you don’t feel any discomfort during the procedure.

Once you’re properly sedated, Dr. Levine makes a horizontal incision between your belly button and your pubic region. The size of the incision depends on how much loose skin Dr. Levine is removing during the procedure.

Once he lifts the skin, he treats your weakened stomach muscles. He pulls your skin down to trim your loose skin; then he stitches up the remaining skin. Finally, Dr. Levine closes up the incision with skin glue.

What is recovery from a tummy tuck like?

You can go home right after a tummy tuck surgery. However, in cases of more extensive tummy tucks, Dr. Levine may want to monitor you closely for a few hours following your surgery.

You can expect some soreness and discomfort for about a week post-surgery. You should also spend the first few days resting at home.

If you have a physically strenuous job, you may need about four weeks of recovery before returning to work. If you have a desk job, two weeks of rest and recovery is advisable.

Is a tummy tuck safe?

As with any procedure, there are risks involved with a tummy tuck, including:

  • Infection
  • Losing skin
  • Swelling or discolored skin
  • Pain
  • Numbness

Before making your decision to undergo a tummy tuck, Dr. Levine will discuss the details of the procedure with you. This consultation is a great time to address your concerns and learn what the realistic expectations are for a tummy tuck procedure.
