Rhinoplasty Q & A

What is rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty, commonly known as a nose job, is a surgical procedure that can improve the proportions of your nose; it can also treat breathing issues caused by anatomical abnormalities.

Rhinoplasty can:

  • Reshape or resize the nose to fit your facial proportions
  • Reshape hooked or bulbous noses
  • Adjust your nose width at the bridge
  • Adjust the size and position of your nostrils
  • Adjust your nose profile by treating humps on the bridge

Rhinoplasty is also a common treatment for a deviated septum. It can improve the alignment of your nasal structure, which allows for less-strained breathing.

How does rhinoplasty work?

When you visit Dr. Levine for rhinoplasty, a trained anesthesiologist administers either an intravenous (IV) sedative or a general anesthesia.

Once you’re sedated, Dr. Levine makes incisions inside your nose or across your columella, the narrow part of your nose that connects your nostrils. He then gently lifts your cartilage and reforms your nasal structure.

If he's reducing the size of your nose, he removes cartilage or bone. If your septum is deviated, Dr. Levine realigns it.

Finally, Dr. Levine uses skin glue to close up your incisions. For at least a few days after your surgery, the incision sites will need to be dressed with gauze packing and supported by splints to help your nose heal.

When will I see results from my rhinoplasty?

In many cases, it takes about a year for your nose to appear as desired. You will likely notice gradual improvements in the appearance of your nose as it settles into its shape.

Dr. Levine will maintain a steady schedule of follow-up visits to discuss and evaluate your progress.

Is rhinoplasty safe?

As with any procedure, there are risks involved with rhinoplasty, including:

  • Infection
  • Pain or numbness
  • Trouble breathing
  • Skin discoloration and swelling
  • Potential revisional surgery

Prior to making your decision to undergo rhinoplasty, Dr. Levine will discuss the details of the procedure with you. This consultation is a great time to address your concerns and ask any questions you may have about the procedure.
