Liposuction Q & A

What is liposuction?

Liposuction is a surgical procedure that addresses localized pockets of fat in areas of your body that are resistant to diet and exercise. Dr. Levine can perform liposuction on nearly any part of your body, including:

  • Lower legs
  • Hips, thighs, and buttocks
  • Back
  • Abdomen and chest
  • Upper arms
  • Neck
  • Along your jawline
  • Cheeks

Liposuction doesn’t treat obesity or provide a weight loss solution. It’s a way to treat localized stubborn pockets of fat in an otherwise healthy figure.

How does liposuction work?

When you visit Dr. Levine for liposuction surgery, a trained anesthesiologist administers either local anesthesia (you’re awake but relaxed and numb) or general anesthesia (you’re asleep).

Next, Dr. Levine injects you with tumescent fluid that expands your tissue, making it easier to treat the fat cells. It also numbs the area and minimizes bleeding.

Dr. Levine then makes small incisions so he can insert a long, skinny tube called a cannula. This tube tunnels into your fat layer and suctions out fat cells. After removing an appropriate amount of fat, Dr. Levine sutures the incisions or leaves them open and applies absorbent pads.

What can I expect after a liposuction procedure?

After the procedure, you will experience some pain, bruising, and swelling. That will naturally fade over the following weeks. You will likely have to wear a compression garment, which will provide comfort during your recovery.

You will notice an immediate improvement, but fuller results will reveal themselves over the following 3-6 months as your body heals.

You should continue living a healthy lifestyle with proper diet and exercise to maintain your results. While liposuction treats existing fat cells, it doesn’t prevent new ones from growing. However, if you take care of yourself, you will be able to enjoy your results for years to come.

Is liposuction safe?

As with any procedure, there are risks involved with liposuction, including:

  • Bruising
  • Soreness
  • Swelling
  • Loose skin
  • Irritation and minor scarring around the incision sites

Before you decide to undergo liposuction, Dr. Levine will discuss the details of the procedure with you. This consultation is a great time to address your concerns and learn about the realistic expectations for a liposuction procedure.
