Eyelid Surgery Q & A

What is eyelid surgery?

Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) is a surgical procedure that can enhance the appearance of your eyelids. Your provider can address cosmetic or functional issues with your upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both. The procedure can treat a variety of issues, including:

  • Wrinkles around your lower eyelids
  • Sagging skin around your eyelids
  • Puffy eyelids caused by fat deposits
  • Deep bags under your eyes
  • Drooping skin on your lower eyelids

Eyelid surgery provides long-lasting results, and the procedure involves minimal pain — in some cases, you may experience some light swelling or bruising.

How does eyelid surgery work?

When you visit Dr. Levine for eyelid surgery, a trained anesthesiologist administers either an intravenous (IV) sedative or general anesthesia.

Once you’re sedated, Dr. Levine makes small incisions to the treatment area. You don't have to worry about noticeable scarring: Your eyelid’s natural structure hide the scars from these incisions.

Dr. Levine either reconfigures fat deposits, removes sagging skin, or tightens up specific muscles, depending on your desired cosmetic results. Finally, he uses skin glue to close up your incisions.

What can I expect after eyelid surgery?

After your procedure, results will appear gradually. Over time, your eyelids will look smoother and reinvigorated.

You may experience some swelling and bruising, but that should subside on its own, usually after about 10-14 days. In some cases, full healing can take a few months. Dr. Levine will monitor your progress and make sure your recovery is going smoothly.

Even though eyelid surgery can treat some conditions with lasting results, you need to take certain precautions. Dr. Levine recommends consistent sun protection to help maintain your results.

Is eyelid surgery safe?

As with any procedure, there are risks involved with eyelid surgery, including:

  • Swelling and bruising
  • Eye dryness
  • Bleeding due to the incisions
  • Infection
  • Temporary vision problems
  • Trouble closing your eyes

Before making your decision to undergo eyelid surgery, Dr. Levine will discuss the details of the procedure with you. This initial consultation is a great time to address your concerns and find out whether eyelid surgery will meet your expectations. Call or book an appointment with Dr. Levine online today.
