Breast Augmentation Q & A

What is breast augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure that involves the placement of implants in your breasts, made of either silicone or saline, to increase the size and improve the shape of your breasts. It is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures.

The purpose of this increase in size is to improve your body proportion rather than to make your breasts the most noticeable part of your appearance.

Am I a good candidate for breast augmentation?

You may be a good candidate for breast augmentation if you are physically healthy and are dissatisfied with the size of your breasts based on proportion.

Choosing implants that are too large for your frame is a mistake that does not beautify your appearance. Your breasts should blend with your appearance and not protrude too noticeably.

You may also benefit from breast augmentation if your breasts are asymmetrical or unusually shaped. A breast lift/implant placement combo can improve these conditions.

How does breast augmentation work?

Breast augmentation surgery is a hospital out-patient procedure. A board-certified anesthesiologist provides general anesthesia so that you are safe and unaware of the operation. During the procedure, Dr. Levine takes several precautions to reduce the risk of infection, such as covering your nipples with a sterile plastic.

After Dr. Levine makes the incisions in your breasts, he places the implant under your pectoral muscle and partially under the breast. The part under the breast is in the lower pole of the breast footprint so that you gain more projection in this area.

After Dr. Levine is sure your implants are balanced and in the correct position, he closes the incisions in layers.

What can I expect following breast augmentation?

You may experience some postoperative swelling after your breast augmentation surgery. Dr. Levine will see you for a follow-up visit the next day to ensure optimal results.

Typically, he will recommend an annual examination to evaluate your breast health and implant integrity. Over time, and possibly as a result of pregnancy, hormonal factors, and gravity, your breasts can change, and you may need to replace your breast implants.
